Overview
Calcium sulfonate complex greases have emerged as a leading technology for high-performance greases due to their exceptional load-carrying capacity, outstanding water washout resistance, high-temperature stability, and excellent anti-corrosion properties, without requiring supplemental EP additives in many applications. The key ingredient is an ultra-high overbased synthetic calcium sulfonate, which undergoes a conversion process during grease manufacture (with promoters such as water and acids) to form the crystalline calcium carbonate thickener matrix within the lubricant. Three ultra-high overbased calcium sulfonate grades are available, optimized for grease manufacturing and differing in TBN, calcium content, and process characteristics.
| Chemistry | TBN (mgKOH/g) | Ca % |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra-high Overbased Synthetic Calcium Sulfonate for Grease | ≥400 | ≥14.8 |
| Ultra-high Overbased Synthetic Calcium Sulfonate for Grease (Blended) | 320–420 | ≥12.5 |
| Ultra-high Overbased Synthetic Calcium Sulfonate for Grease (Special Process) | ≥395 | ≥14.5 |
